O quarto jogo da série Final Fantasy foi originalmente lançado em 1991 no Super Nintendo e tornou-se conhecido nos EUA com o nome de Final Fantasy II, uma vez que foi o segundo jogo da série a ser lançado naquele país.
Em 2006, teve direito a uma reedição para o GBA e eis que em 2007 foi concluído um remake em 3D para a DS, acompanhando a linha de reedições e remakes da Square-Enix que levou reedições de Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy V e Final Fantasy VI ao Game Boy Advance e que trouxe uma remake de Final Fantasy III à portátil de dois écrans da Nintendo.
O jogo já se encontra disponível no Japão desde Dezembro de 2007 mas ainda não é conhecida uma data europeia.

Final Fantasy IV on DS is a complete re-envisioning of the original -- a massive technological upgrade that nevertheless doesn't scrimp on the difficulty. FFIV is often regarded as the last truly challenging entry in the series; the last Final Fantasy to feature viciously difficult enemies throughout the quest and no easy means by which to create a party of invincible, godlike characters. Fittingly, its DS incarnation might actually be even more difficult than 1991's original Super Famicom version.
the game is tougher now, so you're expected to play smarter. FFIV is every bit as brutal as the DS remake of FFIII, but despite its comparatively limited character-building options, canny strategy is more useful than the brute leveling necessary for FFIII.
These are factors that long-time fans will appreciate, given how rarely Square Enix manages to modernize its classics without completely crippling their difficulty level, but Final Fantasy offers more immediately tangible charms for the less devoted as well. Its most obvious improvement, of course, is its facelift. FFIV's game world and characters have been completely recreated in the best real-time 3D the DS has to offer. The bits of fakery seen throughout FFIII -- including cut-out houses and flat scenery elements -- have been completely eradicated; everything is rendered in real-time 3D and still manages to look quite a bit better than FFIII did. Characters have been redesigned to more faithfully resemble artist Yoshitaka Amano's original renditions, though they're still on the cutesy side.
FFIV's DS incarnation is quite possibly the closest thing to a definitive version the game will ever see. It's remarkably faithful to the spirit and details of the original adventure, but offers just enough fresh content and stylings to merit the attention of everyone who feels they've seen all the game has to offer as well.

Comme Final Fantasy III, c'est une fois encore le studio japonais Matrix qui est chargé de redonner vie en 3D à l'un des épisodes les plus réputés de la célèbre série de RPG japonais. Les similitudes graphiques sont d'ailleurs assez étonnantes d'un jeu à l'autre, avec un style rondouillard assez mignon, ce qui laisse effectivement supposer un recyclage opportun du moteur. Mais pour le moment, difficile de dire si ce Final Fantasy IV sera à la hauteur de son prédécesseur, tant les couleurs paraissaient fades et les animations un peu en deçà.
L'interface des jauges sur l'écran inférieur mériterait par exemple un vrai lifting d'ici à la sortie, mais au moins on échappe au syndrome de l'écran noir qui avait frappé le III. Les cartes des donjons seront ainsi affichées sur l'écran tactile, qui sert toujours à diriger son héros sur la partie supérieure, avec l'affichage en sus d'un petit pourcentage d'exploration pour ceux qui tiennent à finir leur jeu à 100%.
La disparition prématurée d'un NPC dans la tanière du monstrueux Antlion, le boss de la démo, permettait par exemple d'hériter de la capacité de chant. L'apprenti barde devait ensuite choisir de remplacer une commande de la liste habituelle (Attaque, Défense, Item, etc.) par la commande chant une fois la capacité assimilée. Résultat, le jeu devrait réserver de nouvelles skills pas encore toutes dévoilées, pour personnaliser davantage les nombreux héros de cette aventure, et même ouvrir sur des attaques combinées inédites.
